The Wrestler(dir. Darren Aronofsky)
Maybe I spoke too soon when I declared this would probably be my favorite film of the year and if I learned anything from last year(and this year as well) is that you can't judge a film by its trailer. So when this movie turned out to be a disappointment, it was perhaps unsurprising. The film's major problem outside of Aronofsky's intentional downsizing his role, at least visibly, is the script. The characters outside of Randy are pretty much cardboard cutouts including his moody and bitchy estranged daughter played by Evan Rachel Wood almost too well and Marisa Tomei's stripper with a heart of gold. Even Randy is something of a joke with the script constantly positing him as something of a saint that wears spandex with young children and essentially everybody involved in the wrestling district being enraptured with him along with his disinterest in T&A during his repeated strip bar visits(he's just there to drinkkk man). Since he's such a great guy, we're supposed to feel really bad when he has to work behind a deli counter instead of being involved in wrestling events where he gets stapled and torn the hell up by barbed wire. Also, all the drama that is generated within the film comes across as a screenwriter's hollow attempts at drama as we're treated to a predetermined fucked subplot with his estranged daughter that I'd immediately write off if it didn't contain one of the best moments of the film and some relationship drama due to Marisa Tomei's character's policy of not dating customers. The crucial heart attack itself is also something of a plot contrivance. Mickey Rourke can be disarmingly sweet throughout the film and I'd understand the praise he's been receiving if he was given some better material.

Oh Vantage Point...
Vantage Point(dir. Pete Travis)
OK. This is one of the most ridiculous movies I've ever seen. Dennis Quaid's character gets blown up, gets in multiple car accidents including one that involved a semi and a wall making a sandwich of car crash madness with him in the middle, and gets shot and yet, he was still able to walk perfectly fine after all this hurt. It also contains a variety of other equally ludicrous pleasures like a little girl that is so dumb that she stands in the middle of the road, waiting for an ambulance to plow through her before getting rescued and several over-the-top plot twists. The film slightly takes itself too seriously and I'm sure all the individuals involved thought the film would be "important" because of it's vaguely topical demeanor, but if it wasn't for this attitude, it wouldn't have been as perversely entertaining as it was. I have a feeling that this is going to be a future camp classic and this is the best film I've seen so far from this year. I slightly recommend.

Oh GOB...
Film:
The Brothers Solomon(dir. Bob Odenkirk)
The best way to sum it up is to rip off the quote on the front cover: it's Dumb and Dumber meets Knocked Up. That's not to say that it comes close to either of those films in terms of quality since the whole affair is a relatively laughless experience because the characters are so upbeat and cheerful that they come across as more creepy than funny. This is a serious contender for worst film from last year with supposedly funny moments like a somewhat overweight woman getting hit by a bus, Will Arnett's character kissing and then licking the wet footprint of the chick he wants to bag, and essentially every line reading by Will Forte. It was bad.

Oh 2008 Movies Watching Log...
Basically going to keep track of all the 2008 movies I see and rank them in a sort of hierarchy of goodness. I will still write reviews, but the ratings found on here might not coincide with the ratings I give in my reviews because a film might "become" better the longer it sinks in or it could potentially "get" worse so this log will probably be in line with my actual thoughts of a film in terms of quality than my reviews as the year progresses. Oh John & Jack...
Rambo(dir. Sylvester Stallone)
The main problem this film has lies in it's viewpoint of it's violence. You aren't sure if it wants the audience to revile it or revel in it so it ends up really satisfying no one. For a film named Rambo, it surprisingly spends little time with him, which might be a blessing in disguise because all he really does is mope around(WAR HAS FUCKED ME UP) and kill some fools(BUT GOD I LOVE IT). All the goods bits are found in trailer and I recommend just watching that since it's pretty much a greatest hits for the film, but you will miss out the bloodbath of a finale where John basically takes out a whole fucking army, which sounds better than it really is. The film is just too humorless and serious to have fun with. It also never ends up being truly thrilling since the character development is minimal even for an action movie. Just rent a Johnnie To film or Live Free or Die Hard instead if you want some good modern action.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest(dir. Gore Verbenski)
Too much Orlando Bloom and not enough Keira Knightley is the chief problem of this installment in the series. Orlando Bloom is perhaps the most boring "younger" actor working today so the fact of the film spends a good chunk of time following him is not exactly what one would call a good thing. The conclusion is about as cliffhanger-y as you can get and there's really no need to see this installment before delving into At World's End, a much better film that can stand on it's own mainly because of the hefty amount of time it spends with Knightley and the plot being pretty much a confusing mess anyways. This is still a mildly fun film to watch, however.

I thought the trailer to Gummo was amazing and saw a little bit of it on IFC. I didn't like what I saw so much. It felt like experimentation for the sake of experimentation instead of using this experimentation to create something dramatically engaging. This film, however, looks more narratively and dramatically focused compared to his other work so maybe it'll end up beeing good. I should probably watch his other movies completely before writing them off, but I don't really have all that much of an interest in seeing them and I actually want to see this one.

Most Anticipated Movies of 2008
1. Tree of Life(dir. Terrence Malick)
If this gets off the ground and actually makes a 2008 release, you bet your ass that this year is going to rock.
2. Jack and Diane(dir. Bradley Rust Gray)
A lesbian werewolf movie with chicks around my age that are attractive (Ellen Page and that other chick in Juno) makes this probably my ultimate male fantasy movie since probably ever. Too bad, it hasn't gone into production yet so it might not make 2008.
3. The Road(dir. John Hillcoat)
I'm not exactly a fan of McCarthy's work just from the hundred or so pages I read of Blood Meridian and the film adaptation of No Country for Old Men, but The Proposition is easily probably the western of this decade and the whole post-apocalyptic world stuff makes me want to see what Hillcoat does with it.
4. Speed Racer(dir. The Wachowski Siblings?)
I don't know what compels me to see this movie. Maybe it's the fact that it could possibly be the biggest debacle of the year or that it might be the most ridiculously fun movie of the year.
5. Two Lovers(dir. James Gray)
A chick flick by the dude that did We Own the Night? Sounds good to me.
6. Diary of the Dead(dir. George A. Romero)
This film looks really... uhh... ahhh.... AHHH... BRAINS!!!
7. Untitled Todd Field Project(dir. Todd Field, duh!)
I highly doubt this will even make this year because it's not even titled yet, but Todd Field can do no wrong in my eyes(for now).
8. The Box(dir. Richard Kelly)
Even though it essentially sounds like a feature-length episode of The Twilight Zone, I simply have to see how this turns out after seeing that epic and fascinating mess that is called Southland Tales.
9. Stop Loss(dir. Kimberly Pierce)
This is another one of those films that I have no idea why I want to see it. I usually try to steer clear of these Oscar-bait sort of films and I haven't seen Boys Don't Cry so I'm not sure how good of a director she is. Maybe there's just a certain endearing quality to that trailer that struck a chord with me. I don't know...
10. Mammoth(dir. Lukas Moodysson)
I didn't bother to watch his two films after Lilya and I'm not so certain he's that great of a director despite getting some amazing performances on his two films that I've seen, but the fact that he's not doing some avant-garde experiment that pretty much no one wants to see(at least so far I know) is enough to get me excited about this film.

Most Anticipated Movies of 2008
1. Tree of Life(dir. Terrence Malick)
If this gets off the ground and actually makes a 2008 release, you bet your ass that this year is going to rock.
2. Jack and Diane(dir. Bradley Rust Gray)
A lesbian werewolf movie with chicks around my age that are attractive (Ellen Page and that other chick in Juno) makes this probably my ultimate male fantasy movie since probably ever. Too bad, it hasn't gone into production yet so it might not make 2008.
3. The Road(dir. John Hillcoat)
I'm not exactly a fan of McCarthy's work just from the hundred or so pages I read of Blood Meridian and the film adaptation of No Country for Old Men, but The Proposition is easily probably the western of this decade and the whole post-apocalyptic world stuff makes me want to see what Hillcoat does with it.
4. Speed Racer(dir. The Wachowski Siblings?)
I don't know what compels me to see this movie. Maybe it's the fact that it could possibly be the biggest debacle of the year or that it might be the most ridiculously fun movie of the year.
5. Two Lovers(dir. James Gray)
A chick flick by the dude that did We Own the Night? Sounds good to me.
6. Diary of the Dead(dir. George A. Romero)
This film looks really... uhh... ahhh.... AHHH... BRAINS!!!
7. Untitled Todd Field Project(dir. Todd Field, duh!)
I highly doubt this will even make this year because it's not even titled yet, but Todd Field can do no wrong in my eyes(for now).
8. The Box(dir. Richard Kelly)
Even though it essentially sounds like a feature-length episode of The Twilight Zone, I simply have to see how this turns out after seeing that epic and fascinating mess that is called Southland Tales.
9. Stop Loss(dir. Kimberly Pierce)
This is another one of those films that I have no idea why I want to see it.
